Window Frame Materials
Vinyl
Vinyl is the most common material for window frames in new homes constructed - this includes site built and prefab modular homes. Vinyl windows are extremely energy efficient and are very affordable. The primary difficulty in installing vinyl windows into a new home is the longevity of the frame material. In addition to the longevity of the frames, the manufacturing process to create vinyl is extremely harmful to the environment.
Vinyl Clad Wood Windows
Vinyl wood clad windows for modular homes are constructed with wood frames and sashes and then cladded with a layer of vinyl to the exterior of the frame. The vinyl minimize requirements for painting and maintenance and the natural wood finish on the interior provides a warm and homey feel.
Wood Windows
Wood windows for modular homes provide less energy efficiency than typical vinyl or vinyl clad windows that cost less. However wood window frames have a longer life expectancy. In addition to lasting longer in a new modular home, wood window frames expand and contract less than vinyl windows. Often the seal between the double glazing will leak sooner with vinyl windows.
Fiberglass Window Frames
Fiberglass windows are relatively new to the modular home market. Fiberglass windows, in my opinion are most superior window to install. Fiberglass windows are durable, energy efficient and paintable if your tastes change over the years. The only downfall to fiberglass windows is the higher price.
