Are the options installed in modular homes junk?
Most modular home factories install the same brand name products installed in stick built homes. For example: Thermatru doors; Andersen windows; Formica countertops, Moen faucets and Kohler fixtures.
Can I just just buy the shell of a prefab home and finish the house myself?
You can just by the shell and finish the house yourself, however it would not be taking advantage of modular construction. In other words it would be plain out stupid. One of the reasons people buy modular homes is the high level of completion when the home is set on the foundation. If you are looking for a shell to finish out yourself you might consider buying a panelized kit home.
What kind of interior trim do modular homes have?
The two primary types of interior trim include MDF and solid wood. Most factories offer pine colonial trim painted white as a standard in the Mid Atlantic states. MDF is a smooth interior trim without grains that cost less. MDF is similar to a particle board. I personally like to see solid wood trim in a modular home. The typical finishes for interior trim upgrades include: pre finished stained pine; unfinished and stained oak. Some factories offer unfinished pine to be stained on site.
The standard size of trim offered in most modular homes include 3.5 inch base trim and 2.5 inch casing. This is a typical standard for both modular homes and site built homes. Most manufacturers offer both different styles and sizes of trim.
Other than base and casing, modular home companies offer crown, rosettes, wainscoting as standard option upgrades. Haven Custom Homes has installed coffered ceilings with oak trim. There is no difference between the interior trim installed in a factory in the field of a "stick" built home.
